What You Will Do
The Detonation Science & Technology (Q-6) Group is searching for an R&D Engineer to support novel electric and optical detonator design and development. Q-6 has an enduring mission to the Laboratory and has been growing a world-class expertise in initiation systems since the Manhattan Project. Q-6 has recognized science and engineering competencies in fields of control systems, pulsed power, detonator design, and high explosives test fire. In this position, you will work under the mentorship of experts who will help you grow your skills in both the applied and theory aspects of detonator development. The selected candidate will work as an integral team member in Q-6, the Detonation Science and Technology Group, under a lead system engineer on new detonator designs. The selected candidate will work with integrated teams across ALDW, ALDX, and other organizations at LANL as well as other NNSA sites and the DoD. Work may include overseeing component or small system mechanical, electrical, optical design, integration, prototyping, project management, and testing. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing larger subsystem mechanical, electrical, optical design, integration, prototyping, , project management, and testing as well as leading teams.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience developing or validating engineered solutions.
Demonstrated ability to network effectively with other engineers and key contacts outside own area of expertise, both internal and external to the organization. Ability to express ideas clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust, as demonstrated through presentations and publications.
Ability to develop a project plan with resource loading. Ability to meet schedule and deliverables for assigned projects. Ability to developing and foster successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to work with and without supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
Detailed knowledge of detonator design. Detailed knowledge of at least one of the following: electrical detonator design, optical detonator design, mechanical design.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to interact effectively with team members and management.
Ability to develop a project plan with resource loading. Ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple assigned projects. Ability to developing and foster successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Experience in project management including planning and executing a resource loaded project schedule.
Experience integrating mechanical engineering with electronic/electrical engineering.
Ability to read and interpret electrical / mechanical engineering design drawings, including GD&T.
Knowledge/experience with project management software (do you want to provide an example of a project management tool?)
Knowledge/experience of statistical analysis techniques.
Knowledge/experience with mechanical and electrical simulations using COMSOL, PSPICE, and other relevant modeling software.
Experience with basic electrical engineering concepts
Experience with laboratory test equipment, including oscilloscopes, function generators, sensors, etc.
Q Clearance, which normally requires US citizenship

for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
